About Us
The UCSF Lab Resource Group (LRG), managed by the Lab Managers' Steering Committee (LMSC), is a broad community of lab managers, researchers, and laboratory support staff from multiple UCSF departments and campuses. Established in the early 1980s, the LMSC has long served as a forum for collaboration, communication, and resource sharing across UCSF's research community. The group includes representatives from key campus organizations such as the Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), UCSF Information Technology Services (ITS), Supply Chain Management, UCSF Logistics, Human Resources, the UC Police Department, and Facilities Management, including Facilities Research Support Services.
Members connect and collaborate through the Lab Manager email listserv and the Lab Resource Group Teams page. Over time, the Lab Resource Group has also come to be known as the Lab Manager Resource Group.
Our Mission
Our mission is to enhance UCSF research by facilitating communication between researchers and supporting organizations, helping to foster mutual communication and understanding. It is part of our mission to ensure the research community has a voice in the development and implementation of policies, operations, and regulations pertaining to laboratory research.
Join Us
The Lab Managers' Steering Committee (LMSC) is a subgroup of the Lab Resource Group composed of researchers, lab managers, and lab-support staff from various UCSF departments. The committee meets via Zoom every two months to discuss topics that impact researchers across campus.
To join the LMSC, individuals must first be part of the Lab Resource Group and express interest in becoming more involved. Prospective members should contact the LMSC Co-Chairs and share how they can contribute to the group.
The LMSC benefits from active member participation, including attending meetings, sharing information with colleagues, bringing forward relevant topics, contributing to discussions, and helping plan and facilitate meetings, programs, and events.
For questions, including joining the leadership team or troubleshooting lab manage-related issues within the UCSF community, please contact the Co-Chairs of the LMSC.
LMSC Chairs: Lia Banie [email protected] and Emanuela Zacco [email protected].
Annual Events
We sponsor the Lab Resource Group Vendor Showcase which raises funds for the competitive Lab Manager Scholarship which supports conference/course registration for Lab Resource members. We create networking opportunities for lab managers and lab affiliates at UCSF, including a social event at the beginning of each year where lab managers can network and meet colleagues.
Collaborations and Community
The UCSF Lab Resource Group partners with organizations across campus to support laboratory operations, safety, professional development, and community building. We are a Staff Registered Campus Organization (RCO) through Campus Life Services (CLS) and are affiliated with the UCSF Office of Opportunity and Outreach.
Our collaborators include Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), Supply Chain Management, Sustainability, Facilities, Facilities Research Services, UC Police Department, Human Resources, ChemCentral, UCSF Cores, Staff Assembly, Administrative Management Professionals (AMP), the Office of Opportunity and Outreach, and Campus Life Services.
We engage with campus leadership, host networking and social events for lab managers, present annual professional development awards, and maintain representation on the Chancellor's Council. We also support campus programs such as the Lab Services Initiative and the Excellence in Lab Safety Awards.
